Overview: Write a 2-3 page paper that demonstrates media literacy skills by describing, evaluating and responding to media sources.

Language	Use appropriate language to support summary response, evaluation, and synthesis, and for polite requests in spoken and written communication.
Rhetorical Thought Pattern	Demonstrate the ability to identify the features and language characteristics of summary response, evaluation and rhetorical thought patterns and be able to organize ideas in communication using these patterns.

Topic: In this unit, we have focused on the topic of Media Literacy. In this paper, you will evaluate two television advertisements and two visual ads for credibility and strength of argument.

Media literacy skills help us to:

Identify who created a particular media message
Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do
Name the “tools of persuasion” used
Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies
Discover the part of the story that’s not being told
Evaluate media messages based on our own experiences, beliefs and values
Create and distribute our own media messages

Procedure:

Step 1: Listening and Note-taking

Step 2: Reading and Note-taking

Read a gun control ad (Links to an external site.) and a gun rights flyer (Links to an external site.) and take notes

Step 3: Summarize and describe

Summarize the written material and describe the audio/visual materials

Step 4: Evaluate the credibility and persuasion.

Use your notes on the videos and written advertisements to:
- Identify who created a particular media message
- Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do
- Name the “tools of persuasion” used
- Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies
- Discover the part of the story that’s not being told

Step 5: Respond

Connect the material to problems in our present-day world
State your opinion
Relates the material to your life experiences or feelings
Discusses whether the material has changed your perspective in any way?

Step 6: Writing

Using the notes/thoughts you have from Step 2, Evaluate the media messages based on the credibility and strength of argument, as well as your personal sense of truth and right
Take a look at the paper and be sure it follows all the guidelines on the assignment sheet and the scoring rubric.
Remember that you must include an appropriate reference to the sources each time you refer to them.

Step 7: Formatting your paper and submitting it

Be sure to:

Use size 12 font
Double-space the lines
Have 1 margins on the left, right, top, and bottom of the page
Include your name, your class and section, and the date at the top of the paper.
