Topic: In this unit, we have focused on the topic of Media Literacy. In this paper, you will evaluate two television advertisements and two visual ads for credibility and strength of argument.
Media literacy skills help us to:
- Identify who created a particular media message
- Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do
- Name the “tools of persuasion” used
- Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies
- Discover the part of the story that’s not being told
- Evaluate media messages based on our own experiences, beliefs and values
- Create and distribute our own media messages
Procedure:
Step 1: Listening and Note-taking

and take notes

Step 2: Reading and Note-taking
- Read a gun control ad (Links to an external site.) and a gun rights flyer (Links to an external site.) and take notes
Step 3: Summarize and describe
- Summarize the written material and describe the audio/visual materials
Step 4: Evaluate the credibility and persuasion.
- Use your notes on the videos and written advertisements to:
- Identify who created a particular media message
- Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do
- Name the “tools of persuasion” used
- Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies
- Discover the part of the story that’s not being told
Step 5: Respond
- Connect the material to problems in our present-day world
- State your opinion
- Relates the material to your life experiences or feelings
- Discusses whether the material has changed your perspective in any way?
Step 6: Writing
- Using the notes/thoughts you have from Step 2, Evaluate the media messages based on the credibility and strength of argument, as well as your personal sense of truth and right
- Take a look at the paper and be sure it follows all the guidelines on the assignment sheet and the scoring rubric.
- Remember that you must include an appropriate reference to the sources each time you refer to them.
Step 7: Formatting your paper and submitting it
- Be sure to:
- Use size 12 font
- Double-space the lines
- Have 1 margins on the left, right, top, and bottom of the page
- Include your name, your class and section, and the date at the top of the paper.
