Discussion Board 3 (Chapters 9-12)

Discussion 3 is due no later than Tuesday, 7/16/2019 b y 10:30 a.m. Please be thorough in your responses. Although I am not requiring you to use external sources, if you do, you must cite them using APA formatting (last name of Author, year; p# if you are using exact quotes). If not using external sources, your response material should come from either of the two assigned texts. Be sure to provide the following to identify where your responses are coming from in your text: (Harris, 2007; p#) or if other book (Applewhite, 2019; p#). By providing me with citations, I will be better able to identify which information are your own ideas and opinions and which information is from the text and other external sources. A good response should contain all of the above. Responses receive up to 30 points. Please be detailed and specific.

(1) Using Chapter 9, please discuss the importance of intergenerational families and how this usually looks (elders live with children/near by, etc.), amount of interaction between elders and adult children, patterns of mutual assistance, grandparent and grandchild relationships and perceptions of grandparents and grandchildren. Why are these relationships important?

(2) Using Chapter 10, please explain myths (not real) and facts about older workers but how belief in these myths can actually hurt older employees. Explain age discrimination in employment, why it happens, and why even with laws to protect older workers, it still occurs. Why do some elders continue working rather than retiring?

(3) Using Chapter 11, explain what has been discovered regarding whether political attitudes and behaviors of adults necessarily change with age and what type of research can capture these changes the most efficiently and why?

Furthermore, describe the relationship between older adults and party attachments, voting behavior and political interest. Does there tend to be more involvement with age? Please explain.

(4) Using Chapter 12, explain why, although the elderly have the lowest victimization rate, they tend to have a higher fear of crime than most; include factors of vulnerability, crimes of fraud (including confidence games, consumer fraud, and medical quackery). Please also explain elder abuse and neglect including types of abuse, likely abusers, reasons for abuse and types of abuse in institutionalized settings.
