DESCRIPTION:

You are expected to build a musical instrument, create a powerpoint presentation that describes the physics of your musical instrument, and to play your instrument for the class.

REQUIREMENTS:

(1). Your instrument must be your own work, made of materials not commercially designed for producing music or sound. Students are encouraged to use recycled “junk” materials. No kits, electric or electronic devices, toy or professional instruments or parts of such instruments will be permitted. Purchased items such as bells, whistles, mouthpieces, reeds, instrument strings or audio oscillators are examples of prohibited devices. No electricity or batteries may be used. All energy must be generated by the student playing the instrument.

(2). Your instrument should play at least one complete octave (8 notes: do, re mi, fa, so, la, ti, do) of a standard musical scale. There is a performance component worth a total of 15 points. To receive 10 of the 15 points all you have to do is play a full major musical scale (one octave).

(3) To get the full 15 points, also play a recognizable tune that is at least 20 seconds long.

(4). You will create a six slides powerpoint that explains the physics principles behind your instrument. It should clearly explain how sound is produced, different pitches, and different volumes are produced.

(5). Cite the 3 sources you consulted on your project.
