A population is made up of people with various backgrounds, traditions, and cultural beliefs. A hospital serves the population. On any given day there are a multitude of different value sets that nurses have to be cognizant of while giving care (Stanley, 2018). Patients value influence diet adherence, end-of-life decisions, emergent situations, rehabilitation or transplant services, and daily nursing protocols. For example, the administration of blood products to Jehovahs witness; different sex nurses caring in the Muslim traditions; or a gluten-free diet for the Hispanic patient are values prohibiting care. Moreover, clients values structure the delivery of care through communication. Communication and education are arguably the most important parts in planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Nurses must assess the values to be respectful, empathetic, and portray cultural competency (Kaihlanen, 2019). The perception of the nurse to the client determine receptiveness of the treatment. When clients are valued, they are more likely to give more information on the barriers to care as well any improvement. In addition, clients are more likely to follow-up and return for continuity of care. The values of the patient are a pillar in quality care. The notion of cultural competence has been adopted in nursing schools, textbooks, and hospital seminars due to its importance in caring for individuals.
