Thank you for starting us off this week! I would agree the actions of the medical assistant are beyond the scope of practice and certainly could be considered criminal. You mention legal impact for you as the NP, what about the physician?
If it was your NP number used to renew the prescription for the patient, what would be your immediate actions to help mitigate harm? You mention policy and procedure. Indeed these are critical elements to provide structure to a work environment, but Stephanie is a long standing MA at that practice, is it likely she did not know the policy or was there another motivation?
Navigating a situation like this as a new NP can cause much stress for an NP and while education and training certainly can come, the NP must show leadership in the immediate situation. What leadership characteristic would you personally draw on immediately and why?
