For this lab activity, you will need to use the following word document that provides diagnosis, procedures, and services found in the healthcare field. Click here for the Module 02 Practice Coding Pathways worksheet.

Before entering your answers in the worksheet review the following directions.

• First determine, based on the documentation given, what the main term, procedure or root operation is and look it up in the alphabetic index first.
• Note that if you try a main term, procedure, or root operation and it is not found in the index, then you need to try another main term or procedure/root operation name to see if that one works. There are times where you have to try several different words that you might think are main terms before you find the correct main term in the index that will lead you to the correct code.
• Make sure you have read about main terms in each code book before trying to determine main terms. Each type of coding system varies a little in how main terms are determined.

Next, complete the following steps for this lab.

• For each diagnosis, procedure, or service documented find the main term that you would use to find a code in the index of the coding system code book that fits for that documentation.
• Follow the directions given in the Module 02 Practice Coding Pathways worksheet to practice the coding pathways for each coding system. Each will be a little different, so read instructions carefully.
