NSG6203 South University Teaching Plan Nursing Discussion

NSG6203 South University Teaching Plan Nursing Discussion

This is her Notes for the discussion.

  • As you plan and implement your teaching plan, I am reminded by the challenges that new nurse educators must face. There are multiple competencies that a new nurse educator must master. Billings and Halstead (2012) list multiple competencies such as: (a) knowledge skills, and values needed to fulfill the nurse educator role, (b) curriculum development, (c) evaluating student outcomes, (d) professional practice, (e) relationships with students and colleagues, (f) faculty governance, and (g) scholarship. Many times, nurse educators are thrust into the nurse educator role with little or no mentoring. Academia often believes that since we are expert clinicians, we can educate students. Rarely is that the case. This transition can be confusing, frustrating, and anxiety provoking to a new nurse educator. Without the proper mentoring and orientation in place, nurse educators often leave prematurely. Because we overestimate the abilities of a new nurse educator, academia can fail us. Nurse educators may not develop to their fullest potential, resulting in students who are shortchanged. Given the proper development, both faculty and students will reap the benefits.Christina, it sounds as if you have an excellent preceptor. I am looking forward to reading about the implementation of your teaching plan. ReferenceBillings, D. & Halstead, J. (2016). Teaching in nursing: A guide for faculty. St. Louis, MO: Elsevier.

Reflective Discussion

Share your revised teaching plan and discuss your experiences in development of the plan. Tie your discussion to your QSEN, IOM recommendations, personal goals, course objectives, NLN Nurse Educator competencies, and South University’s College of Nursing Conceptual Framework Pillars (Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism, and Holism).

Be sure you write this journal “off-line” and then copy/paste to this discussion forum (do not upload as a Word document). This will be something you will want to look back at as you progress forward in your upcoming role as a nurse educator.

Reflective Discussion Rubric (applies to all weeks)

Directions:

Discussion Question Response: By the due date assigned, post your response to the appropriate discussion threads in the Discussion Area.

Journal Entry Requirements:

  • A personal, introspective, subjective account that focuses on QSEN, IOM recommendations, personal goals, course objectives, and ties to NLN’s Nurse Educator Competencies.
  • Connected to South University’s College of Nursing Conceptual Framework Pillars (Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism, and Holism).
  • Connected to prior coursework through reflective analysis.

Partcipation Responses: No later than the end of week, review and comment on the discussion responses posted by at least two of your peers.

Guidelines: Support your responses with scholarly academic references using APA style format. Assigned course readings and online library resources are preferred. Weekly lecture notes are designed as overviews to the topic for the respective week and should not serve as a citation or reference.

In your discussion response, provide a substantive response that is well-reasoned and thoughtful; is factually correct with relevant scholarly citations, references, and examples; and that demonstrates a clear connection to the readings.

In your participation responses to your peers, comments must demonstrate thorough analysis of postings and extend meaningful discussion by building on previous postings.
