Interpersonal communication refers to the exchange of communication that occurs between two or more individuals. From that description, interpersonal communication caters to both verbal and non-verbal communication (Alnour & A, 2019). A health history is one of the key factors highly dependent on the importance of interpersonal communication. The motive behind this affluence is that, for a clinician to develop a good health history of a certain patient, it will be of good importance to consider both positive and negative factors. For instance, in this case, interpersonal communication is highly affected by various barriers that make it difficult to pass a message from one individual to another, especially in the health facility (Irfan, 2017). From that explanation, this paper discusses the barriers associated with interpersonal communication based on the development of the health history case of a patient. Then again, the report will discuss the techniques and procedures used in the evaluation of a patient in developing a health history case in conjunction with the S.O.A.P terminology used in the medical field.
Interpersonal Communication Barriers and Evaluation Techniques
Language, cultural, personality, and generational differences are the list of interpersonal communication barriers discussed in this paper in conjunction with the techniques used in developing a health history case (Rozaki, 2020). Within the medical field, a clinician needs to configure various languages to ease communication with multiple patients within the clinic. The fact behind this logic is that it will result in misunderstanding of the two personnel use different languages in their communications (Irfan, 2017). On the other hand, during the evaluation process, the clinician should be in a position to understand the patient’s language for an effective history case development.
Cultural differences are the other interpersonal communication barriers that occur between a patient and a clinician. As it is widely recognized, people from different societies are likely to differ due to their differences in norms and beliefs (Alnour & A, 2019). It is then of good importance for a clinician to be in a position to interpret the cultural beliefs and norms of patients for better development of health history cases within the clinic.
Personality and generational differences are the other interpersonal communication barriers that occur between a patient and a clinician. Personality traits differ from one individual to another, a case that makes extraversion express themselves better than introverts. Therefore, a clinician should be able to evaluate the personal traits possible by a patient in the clinic for the successful development of a health history case (Rozaki, 2020). On the other hand, generational differences refer to a person’s priorities and preferences in their communication. In this case, a clinician should clearly understand the importance of a patient to avoid interruptions during their communication.
S.O.A.P Documentation Approach
SOAP refers to healthcare providers’ documentation method in recording information regarding a patient like the admission note within the healthcare facility. The subjective component entails the purpose of a patient visiting the healthcare facility, key information for recording patient’s data (Irfan, 2017). The objective part refers to the clinician’s findings in the patient’s chart, whereas the assessment component relates to the clinician’s symptoms after patient evaluation. The plan component is the intentions of the clinician towards the patient’s treatment within the healthcare facility.
Conclusion
Indeed, Interpersonal communication refers to the exchange of communication that occurs between two or more individuals. Communication is a fundamental clinical skill that if performed competently and efficiently, facilitates the establishment of a relationship of trust between the medical staff and the patient-customer, a truly therapeutic alliance.
