Alignment to Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Apply skills in locating, selecting, referencing and interpreting appropriate academic sources to produce an annotated bibliography and essay.
  2. Evaluate theories of decision making.

Assessment type: Written Assignment

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to develop argumentation skills through essay writing. Students are required to build on their Annotated Bibliography to develop a proposition on which to base an argumentative essay.

Instruction: Within the broad theme of Rationality Versus Bias in Managerial Decision Making, you are to develop a specific proposition (statement) about which you write an argumentative essay providing evidence for, against and around the proposition. Examples of a propositions:

  • Rational decision-making exists only in a world of certainty.
  • Ethical decision making is not applicable in uncertain business environments.

The assessment includes a learning engagement component comprising of two parts:

  1. The first part requires students to post their proposition in the Assessment 2: Learning Engagement (Part One) – Argumentative Essay 1% discussion forum in Blackboard. Marks are awarded for posting a proposition. Students are encouraged to read and comment on propositions posted by other students, but marks are not awarded for comments.
  1. The second part of the learning engagement requires students to post a draft of their Argumentative Essay in the Assessment 2: Learning Engagement (Part Two) – Argumentative Essay: 9% discussion forum in Blackboard. Students are encouraged to read and comment (50 – 100 words per comment) on three draft essays posted by other students. Marks are awarded for posting and commenting.
