In this week’s supplemental readings I’ve posted some articles on work-related issues. I’d like you to read some of these articles and then see how they fit in with the book’s focus on labor as a cost. As many of you are taking Macroeconomics next quarter, this also provides an opportunity to consider the macro-micro connection. Increases in pay are, of course, an additional cost to employers, but how do improvements in overall productivity affect business, how does worker motivation (or lack therof) translate into growth? Many work-related issues don’t fit neatly into our micro analysis, but as probably all of use are workers, it’s worth considering labor-related issues and how they relate to the pressures to profits.
