A good leader comes in many forms depending on the type of work we do and the people we work with. What might be good for one, might not be good for another. When I took over the role of unit manager over a year and a half ago, my unit was a mess. The previous manager would hide in her office and come out only if there was an emergency and for meetings. When I became manager, I made it clear that my door was always open. Which it is, I listen to everything going on at the nurses’ desk, provide feedback to any issues, help the nurses all the time with orders, desk work, phone calls, treatments, etc. This was a huge and welcoming change. The staff on my floor speak highly of my good deeds and it is noted on a regular basis. My floor is now the one everyone wants to work on. To be a good leader, one must show respect to all staff even the housekeepers and dietary, we must communicate and collaborate well with our peers, we need to encourage critical thinking skills and work above with evidence based practice. Listening to the opinions of the staff is important too. Keeping an open mind to any issues and helping someone with a problem are all good attributes to a leader. Organization, time management, and a caring mannerism I believe is good to.

My leadership style is well liked by my unit. From the article, it discusses being a “role model, setting high standards, and motivating.” (Boamah, 2018) Transformational leadership “supports the transformation of organizational beliefs, values, and behaviors to promote positive change and meet future and shared visions as a collaborative process among staff.” (Mennella, 2018) I highly support collaboration with the entire team at work. I talk to everyone and have input about a resident or issue that helps support the resident to have high quality care and maintain safety at the same time. The staff on my unit look up to me and frequently tell me that my story is inspirational to them and helped them make the decision to go back to school themselves. They find it fascinating that I can manage the unit, work extra hours, care for my kids, and do school. They also appreciate that I will listen to them and that I am understanding if they have an issue. “Job satisfaction of nurses is critical to meeting the challenges of quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and retention of nurses in hospitals.” (Boamah, 2018) Somedays it is hard doing our jobs, however, being positive and looking for the positives during the day makes the unit a happier place to be and the residents can sense when the staff is stressed and it adds to their issues.

The TEACH value I find to be most beneficial is TEAMWORK. Everyone needs to work together for the best outcome. All members of the healthcare team must collaborate and work together to provide the resident evidence based, quality, and safe care. All members of the healthcare team play an important role for each resident and there has to be communication so all aspects of care are covered.
