Summarize your general beliefs of what makes a good leader.

There are many different leadership styles. I would say I have experienced several different leadership styles firsthand and have seen leaders with different personalities and styles be effective. Personally, I feel that a good leader is charismatic and can motivate their staff. I believe a strong leader knows how to raise the morale of the team and has a positive outlook. Additionally, good leaders should make their greater goal for the team known, they listen to the ideas and concerns of the team and are able to influence the team to work together toward the goal.

Regarding the transformational leadership skills discussed in our required article reading, how do you think your leadership style is perceived by others?

In our assigned reading this week, Boamah, Laschinger, Wong & Clarke (2018) discuss how transformational leadership is closely linked with attitudes and empowerment at work. These leaders encourage the team to partake in decision making and critically think along with the team. Transformative leaders empower others and can positively affect the culture of safety in healthcare settings (Fischer, 2016). I am a part of a team that is led through transformative leadership at a local magnet designated hospital, so this concept is one that I am familiar with. I would say it was a natural style for me to adapt to. I am an open-minded leader and participant on my team, one who listens and believes that empowerment is important for all members on the unit. I do believe that I empower those around me, I team with others well and see the true value of teamwork. I believe others would say that my leadership style is fair and positive. I believe in raising the level of moral at work and helping where I can. I feel very fortunate to be in a hospital that creates a positive work atmosphere through this type of transformational leadership.

What aspect of the TEACH values discussed in the lesson do you think would most benefit your work environment if adopted?

I believe the TEACH values of Teamwork, Energy, Accountability, Community and Heart that we learned about this week, would benefit my unit and any unit that adopted them. This is such a strong and important set of values; I believe that every point is important. The element that I think would be most valuable in my unit at the present time is Energy. I like that this one of the TEACH values speaks of working with the idea of building a positive spirit and looking for the best ways to achieve our goals (Chamberlain University, 2019). When we support each other with positivity we can change the course of another person’s day, which in turn changes the mood on the unit. My unit is often busy and when one or two of the nurses become negative about the workload it begins to affect others in a negative way. I think if we were to promote this idea of energy and positive outlook, it would be a nice shift in the overall atmosphere on the unit.
